**The African Development Bank's Board of Directors approved a financing of €293.88 million for Kenya on 8 July 2026, from its headquarters in Abidjan. The objective: accelerate economic governance reforms, strengthen inclusion for women and youth, and support a green and resilient growth transition.**

## Massive Support for Structural Reforms

The financing is built around three pillars: public financial management (budget transparency, procurement reform, debt communication), private sector development (SME support, jobs for women and youth) and climate resilience. It is aligned with Kenya's 4th Medium-Term National Plan (2023-2027) and Vision 2030\. Coordination with the IMF, World Bank and other development partners is planned.

'The reforms supported by this programme will strengthen economic governance and create conditions for inclusive and green growth in Kenya,' the AfDB stated in its official communiqué. This is one of the largest financings ever granted to the country by the pan-African institution.

## A Kenya in Rapid Transformation

This new financing comes in the context of Kenya's accelerating economic transformation. The World Bank recently revised its **2026 growth projection down to 4.3%**. Technology fundamentals remain solid: Safaricom counts 35 million active M-Pesa subscribers and processes 100 million transactions daily, with a national financial inclusion rate of 84.8% — up from 26% in 2006\. In parallel, Kenya announced on 2 July an additional **$40 million contribution to ATIDI** (African Trade and Investment Development Insurance), bringing its total commitment to $65 million — a clear signal of an Africa financing its own development.

## Economic Inclusion at the Core

The AfDB programme explicitly targets women, youth and micro-enterprises. With a population of over 50 million — 60% under 25 — Kenya must create skilled jobs at scale. Support for governance and financial integrity is therefore also a long-term bet on social stability.

## Why It Matters

€293.88 million in a single board decision: this is the strongest signal the AfDB could send about its confidence in Kenya's trajectory. For Indian Ocean investors looking at East Africa, this institutional vote of confidence concretely reduces perceived risk and paves the way for more ambitious private partnerships.
