Visa has launched the sixth cohort of its **Africa Fintech Accelerator** from Accra, Ghana, with **21 startups selected from 9 African countries** — including, for the first time, representatives from Niger, Togo and the **Seychelles**. The programme has thus crossed the symbolic milestone of **100 startups supported**: in total, 104 companies from five cohorts carry a combined valuation of **$1.4 billion**.

## Themes Aligned With Market Evolution

Cohort 6 focuses on four areas: **payments and remittances**, **stablecoins**, **agentic commerce** (AI-driven transactions) and **sustainable finance**. These themes reflect the major tensions running through African fintech: informal dollarisation of economies, the rise of AI in financial services, and rising ESG criteria among institutional investors.

## An Accelerator That Has Become a Continental Reference

Launched in 2021, the Visa Africa Fintech Accelerator offers selected startups access to mentoring, $200,000 in product credits and Visa's global business ecosystem. Previous cohorts have produced startups active across **28 African markets**, demonstrating the programme's genuinely pan-African reach.

## Seychelles Participation: A Historic First

Seychelles' entry into Cohort 6 marks a first for an archipelago that has until now been quiet in the regional fintech ecosystem. It confirms the emergence of local tech players capable of competing in continental-level programmes — a dynamic to watch closely for Indian Ocean observers.

## Why It Matters

Visa's Africa Fintech Accelerator remains one of the rare private programmes offering direct access to global payment rails and an internationally reputable brand. For startups in small island economies, like those of the Indian Ocean, it is a gateway to commercial partnerships and fundraising rounds that are out of reach through local channels alone.
