Satellite software startup Satlyt has closed an **$8 million seed round**, announced in early October 2026\. While the company is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, it chose **Nairobi** to establish its African engineering hub — a decision that speaks to the growing strength of Kenya's deeptech ecosystem.

## Technology at the intersection of space and AI

Satlyt develops software embedded aboard satellites to extend **artificial intelligence computing capabilities** directly in orbit. In practical terms, this enables real-time processing of spatial data from low Earth orbit, without waiting for downlinks to ground servers — a critical advance for surveillance, meteorology, precision agriculture and disaster management applications.

The $8 million round is led by **Non Sibi Ventures**, with participation from TLCOM Capital, Antler, Slauson & Co., Launch Africa Ventures and Enza Capital — a lineup combining deeptech-specialist funds with Africa-focused investors.

## Nairobi confirms its role as Africa's deeptech capital

Choosing Nairobi as the engineering hub is no accident. Kenya's capital already hosts technical teams from Google, Microsoft, Safaricom and numerous African deeptech startups. A growing pool of skilled engineers, world-class universities and an active tech community make Nairobi one of the best-positioned cities to host Africa's emerging space economy.

## Why it matters

Orbital AI is no longer science fiction — it is an emerging real market with direct applications for Africa, where ground-based infrastructure remains limited. The fact that a US startup chooses Nairobi for its engineers sends a clear message: Africa is no longer just a deployment market for space technology, it is becoming a place of creation. For Indian Ocean investors, Africa's space sector is one to watch closely.
