Kenya recorded tourism receipts of 500 billion shillings (USD 3.84 billion) in 2025, up 10% from 2024\. With 2.7 million international visitors and consistently rising numbers since the post-pandemic recovery, the country is cementing its status as East Africa's premier safari destination.

## A Historic 2025

Kenya's Minister of Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, announced the official figures in April 2026: 500 billion shillings in tourism receipts (approximately USD 3.84 billion), up from 452.2 billion in 2024 — a 10% year-on-year increase. Total tourist numbers reached 7.9 million in 2025, including 2.7 million international visitors (up from 2.4 million in 2024 and just 2.08 million in 2023).

The recovery trajectory is remarkable: in 2020, receipts had collapsed by 70% to 88.5 billion shillings under the impact of Covid-19\. Five years later, the sector has not only recovered its pre-crisis levels — it has far surpassed them.

## Safaris: The Indispensable Growth Engine

Wildlife tourism remains the primary lever for revenue growth. Kenya's network of national parks — Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo — is unique in Africa, attracting premium international visitors willing to pay thousands of dollars per night at luxury lodges. Upgraded hospitality offerings and the rise of conservation tourism reinforce the country's attractiveness.

## A Regional Hub for East Africa

Nairobi is also establishing itself as an aviation hub for East Africa, with Kenya Airways serving 54 destinations on the continent. This geographic and logistical advantage positions Kenya to capture both long-haul tourists (Europe, North America, Asia) and regional Indian Ocean travellers — including from Mauritius and Réunion.

## Why It Matters

Kenya's tourism performance illustrates East Africa's potential as a world-class destination. For Indian Ocean operators and investors, Nairobi is both a source market (Kenyan business travellers) and an indispensable hub for regional connections. The momentum in wildlife and luxury tourism in Kenya also creates benchmarks and co-packaging opportunities for neighbouring Indian Ocean destinations.
