**For the first time in several years, Kenya has surpassed Ethiopia in nominal GDP, according to the latest IMF World Economic Outlook projections.** This reversal is largely driven by the sharp depreciation of the Ethiopian birr, and repositions Nairobi as the undisputed economic capital of East Africa.

## $135.9 billion: Kenya takes the lead

According to the IMF's World Economic Outlook, Kenya's nominal GDP reached $135.92 billion in 2025, compared to $126.35 billion for Ethiopia. The gap — $9.57 billion — may seem modest, but it marks a symbolic and strategic turning point for the region. In real terms, Kenya grew by 4.6% in 2025\. In the second quarter of 2026, the Kenyan economy accelerated to +5.1% year-on-year, one of the country's best recent performances.

## Birr depreciation: the decisive factor

Ethiopia still reported a GDP of $210 billion in 2024\. The near-40% contraction in dollar terms does not reflect an economic collapse — Ethiopian real growth remains solid at 9.2% — but rather the exchange rate liberalisation required under an IMF programme. The birr lost significant value, mechanically shrinking the economy in dollar terms. Kenya, with a more resilient currency, comes out ahead in the rankings.

## Nairobi confirmed as regional hub

Beyond the figure, Kenya consolidates its position as a commercial, technological and financial hub for East Africa. The country is now ranked Africa's 7th largest economy. Its key sectors — telecoms, financial services, agribusiness, tourism — continue to attract foreign investors. For Indian Ocean players, Nairobi remains an essential gateway to an East African market of over 500 million people.

## Why this matters

This reclassification has concrete effects: access to international financing, country risk perception, FDI attractiveness and negotiating power in regional blocs such as the EAC and COMESA. For Indian Ocean businesses targeting continental expansion, it confirms Kenya as the preferred entry point into East Africa.
