**Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest man, has acquired 24.76% of Kenya Pipeline Company for approximately $327 million. Announced in London on October 21, the deal completes an integrated energy strategy: Lamu refinery, pipeline distribution, pan-African IPO.**

## A Strategic Asset at the Heart of East Africa

Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) is the logistical backbone of Kenya's petroleum sector: 1,342 km of pipeline, depots, pumping stations and terminals handling around 14 billion litres of fuel per year. Founded in 1973, it supplies Kenya's domestic market and several neighbouring countries. Until 2026, the Kenyan state was its sole shareholder — before an IPO transferred 65% of capital to public investors. Dangote then executed a block purchase on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) at around KSh 42.5 billion (\~$327 million), implying a total company valuation of KSh 163.9 billion.

## The Logic of a Continental Value Chain

"We bought 25% of their pipeline network for the distribution of petroleum products," Dangote declared at the London announcement. The transaction fits within an integrated value-chain strategy: the Nigerian tycoon is already building a refinery at Lamu — a $16 billion investment targeting a 2030 launch, modelled on his massive Lagos refinery (700,000 bpd). Controlling both production and distribution fundamentally shifts the balance of power in the sector.

## An IPO Open to East Africa

In parallel, Dangote launched an IPO for his Nigerian refinery, with 20% open to East African investors, targeting up to $300 million raised from the region. East Africa thus finds itself at the centre of an unprecedented continental industrial and financial strategy, driven by endogenous capital.

## Why It Matters

For the first time, an African billionaire is taking control of a key petroleum infrastructure asset in another African country — without Western or Gulf investors. The deal raises legitimate questions about the balance between commercial interests and national energy security. But above all, it demonstrates that African capital is now capable of financing major continental assets. A lesson for Indian Ocean economies still searching for investors of this calibre.
