Kenyan fintech Cloud9 finalised in August 2026 the all-stock acquisition of Chpter, a conversational commerce platform with over 4,500 merchants and more than one million processed transactions. The deal marks Cloud9's second acquisition in three months and reveals an aggressive expansion strategy in African business banking.

## Two Complementary Platforms, One Ambition

Cloud9 runs a digital banking service for businesses. Chpter was a social commerce platform enabling merchants to sell directly via WhatsApp, Instagram and other messaging apps. By acquiring Chpter's merchant base — over 4,500 active businesses — Cloud9 gains a transaction flow on which it can layer financial services: credit, insurance, and cash-flow management.

## The Strategic Logic of Tesh Mbaabu

Cloud9's founder, Tesh Mbaabu, had himself co-founded Chpter before leaving in September 2025 to launch Cloud9 just weeks later. This acquisition is therefore a deliberate return: Mbaabu has intimate knowledge of Chpter's client base and technical infrastructure. Cloud9 had previously acquired M-Tickets in May 2026 for approximately $773,000\. The financial terms of the Chpter deal were not disclosed.

## African Business Banking Consolidation Accelerates

The acquisition illustrates a broader continental trend: fintechs are no longer content to build a single product. They are seeking to become the «financial operating system» of African SMEs, aggregating commerce, payments and banking services in one interface. Cloud9 is following the model of Moove or Wave: growing through vertical integration rather than pure customer acquisition alone.

## Why It Matters

African SMEs remain massively underbanked. Millions of merchants active on social networks manage their cash flows manually or through fragmented tools. Platforms that successfully combine online selling and financial services — where the customer already is — capture enormous value. Cloud9 is positioning itself to play that role in Kenya and, potentially, across Africa.
