**On 14 September 2026, Nairobi hosted the AmCham Business Summit, drawing the biggest names in American investment. In a single day, announced commitments surpassed $600 million — approximately Sh77.5 billion. A powerful signal of US capital's confidence in Kenya and, more broadly, in East Africa.**

## $600 million in one day

Angela Ng'ang'a, chairperson of AmCham Kenya's board of directors, was blunt: "We did see, in just one day, over $600 million of pledges and commitments from US-American firms." This figure exceeded expectations and illustrates the growing appetite of multinationals for a Kenyan market that is deliberately positioning itself as a gateway to East Africa and the continent.

## The big moves, sector by sector

The commitments span a wide spectrum, from consumer goods to digital infrastructure:

- **Coca-Cola** announces a $175 million investment over five years to expand local production capacity.
- **Mars Wrigley** inaugurates a production line representing $103 million.
- **SC Johnson** opens a new factory capable of producing up to 2 million malaria-related units daily.
- **Oracle** launches the first public cloud region in Africa, in partnership with African Data Centres.
- **iColo / Digital Realty** commits $80 million to a data centre in Nairobi.
- **Pfizer** plans to introduce 15 new pharmaceutical products in Kenya, including cancer treatments.

## Beyond aid, toward trade

This summit illustrates a paradigm shift in the Kenya-US relationship: the relationship is moving from development aid toward trade and investment. This is precisely what Kenya's business community had been calling for. The country is capitalising on its relative stability, regional logistics hub status and skilled young workforce to attract this capital.

## Why it matters

For the broader Indian Ocean region, this summit sends a clear message: East Africa is competitive for American investment. Kenya plays the role of regional locomotive, but the flows deployed there — tech, pharma, data centres, manufacturing — are destined to benefit the wider zone, including Madagascar and Mauritius, which share growing economic ties with Nairobi.
