Kenya advances from 7th to 5th place in the Absa Africa Financial Markets Index 2026, scoring 65 out of 100\. The Nairobi Stock Exchange is accelerating, and regulators have earned a perfect transparency score from evaluators.

## Two-Spot Jump in the Continental Rankings

Published jointly by Absa Group and the OMFIF, the Absa Africa Financial Markets Index assesses 28 financial markets across six pillars: market depth, foreign exchange access, transparency, institutional investor framework, macroeconomic capacity, and international cooperation.

In 2026, Kenya scores 65/100 — up from 59 a decade ago — and climbs to 5th place, overtaking Botswana and Nigeria. South Africa retains the top spot, followed by **Mauritius** in 2nd and Namibia in 3rd.

« Kenya's progression reflects a tangible improvement in investor confidence and a growing depth of available instruments on the market, » the index notes.

## A Record-Breaking Nairobi Stock Exchange

The Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE) underpins this ranking with remarkable performance. Its market capitalisation now exceeds 4,000 billion Kenyan shillings in 2026 — a historic level. In the first half alone, 322.2 billion KSH in equities were traded, compared to 145.4 billion for all of 2025, with 9.5 billion shares changing hands.

On the bond side, more than 1,700 billion KSH were traded through end-June 2026, a pace that could challenge the 2025 record of 2,710 billion. Two new dollar-denominated vehicles were also launched: African Logistics Properties' industrial REIT (March 2026) and Centum's TRIFIC real estate fund (late June), which together raised approximately 7.68 billion KSH.

## First IPO in a Decade

A symbolically important milestone: the listing of Kenya Pipeline Company in March 2026 marks the NSE's first IPO in over ten years. It signals a political will to energise domestic capital markets and attract new issuers to the Nairobi exchange.

Despite these advances, the index flags two structural weaknesses: market depth (43/100) and pension fund development (30/100), both still insufficient to translate liquidity into sustained corporate financing.

## Why It Matters

This ranking leap sends a clear signal to foreign and regional investors. Nairobi is cementing itself as East Africa's financial reference hub — and its perfect transparency score (100/100) is a decisive argument against competing markets. For Indian Ocean businesses seeking financing or exposure to East Africa, the NSE is becoming an increasingly credible option. Notably, Mauritius holds 2nd place in the ranking, reaffirming the strength of its financial centre at a continental scale.
