The Central Bank of Comoros (BCC) published its 2025 annual report on 28 August 2026, confirming a notable rise in the archipelago's banking sector: activity grew by approximately 14%, signalling a long-awaited banking revival.

## A Consolidated Sector After Years of Reform

The BCC's 2025 report paints an encouraging picture of the Comorian financial system. After several years of structural reforms aimed at strengthening banking institutions, the sector shows a "sensible improvement in key financial indicators" and overall activity up around 14%. The BCC describes the system as "consolidated" — an unprecedented signal of institutional stabilisation.

The Comoros archipelago operates within the franc zone, with the Comorian franc pegged to the euro. This monetary anchor has long constrained the room for manoeuvre of local banks, but reforms in recent years — particularly around institution governance and prudential supervision — are beginning to bear fruit.

## An Archipelago Long Underbanked

The Comoros has historically ranked among the least banked economies in sub-Saharan Africa. Low access to credit curbed the growth of local SMEs and private investment. The 2025 progress therefore marks a turning point: for the first time in years, indicators are converging positively, with growth in activity and a simultaneous improvement in credit portfolio quality.

## Structural Challenges Remain

Despite this upturn, the Comorian banking sector remains fragile. The small size of the economy, dependence on diaspora remittances and lack of digital infrastructure still limit credit growth prospects. The development of mobile banking and digital financial services — already underway in other Indian Ocean islands — represents a growth avenue to seize.

## Why It Matters

A healthy banking sector is the primary condition for economic development in an island archipelago like the Comoros. A 14% rise in activity signals an enhanced capacity to finance local businesses, mobilise savings and attract foreign investment. In a regional context where the Indian Ocean is asserting itself as a growth space, the Comoros now has a stronger financial lever to participate in that momentum.
