# [COMOROS] 2027 Island Games: €84 million to transform the country

With one year to go before the Indian Ocean Island Games, the Comoros are engaged in the largest sports infrastructure project in their history. The event's projected budget stands at **41.3 billion KMF**, or approximately **€84 million**, according to the Games Organising Committee (COJI) report.

## A massive construction race against the clock

Of this total, **36.29 billion KMF** (approximately €74 million) is earmarked for building and renovating sports infrastructure. The programme calls for **15 sites to be renovated** and **12 new facilities to be built**, including an Olympic village at Mwandzaza Djumbe, a gymnasium and Olympic pool at Mitsudje, and a stadium with Olympic track at Ikoni. Fifteen sports are on the programme, including athletics, basketball, football, swimming and sailing.

## A critical race against time

The timeline is tight. No construction had officially begun when the report was submitted to the President. The International Council of Games had set a decisive meeting in Moroni to assess progress, with an explicit risk of reallocation if deadlines were not met.

On the tourism front, the Comoros are banking on the event to accelerate the development of their hotel and airport infrastructure — two weak links in their current tourism ecosystem.

## Why it matters

The 2027 Island Games represent far more than a sporting event for the Comoros: they are a unique acceleration window to modernise infrastructure, attract investors and position the archipelago as an Indian Ocean destination. A successful Games would provide unmatched international visibility — the most significant in the country's recent history.
