A strategic turning point for the archipelago. The Comoros Maritime Corridor project, backed by the African Development Bank Group with **$137 million**, has officially entered its implementation phase. The goal is ambitious: transform Comoros into a logistics hub at the crossroads of Africa and Asia.

## Massive, Multi-Source Financing

The African Development Bank (AfDB) provides $135 million through its African Development Fund, supplemented by $2 million from the Transition Support Fund. Surrounding this core, an additional co-financing of over **$110 million** has been mobilized from the World Bank, Islamic Development Bank, Agence Française de Développement, European Union, and European Investment Bank. Together, this represents an unprecedented investment effort for Comorian infrastructure.

## Port Modernization and a Special Economic Zone

The project includes the modernization of key port infrastructure in Moroni, Mutsamudu, and Fomboni. A **special economic zone** is also planned to attract regional and international investors. The project aligns with the national plan "Comoros Émergent 2030," championed by President Azali Assoumani, who officially launched the initiative in Moroni.

## Thousands of Jobs Expected

The expected benefits go beyond infrastructure alone. The AfDB targets the creation of **thousands of jobs**, prioritizing youth and women. Agricultural and fisheries value chains — the backbone of the Comorian economy — should gain improved regional connectivity to access East African and Gulf markets.

## Why It Matters

For decades, Comoros has suffered from costly insularity: expensive transport, dominant imports, limited exports. This maritime corridor changes the geostrategic reality for the archipelago. By positioning itself as a transit point between sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, Comoros could capture a share of Indian Ocean trade flows — a significant windfall for an economy where GDP per capita remains below $1,500\. The project's success is central to the ambitions of the "Comoros Émergent 2030" plan.
