A first in African venture capital history. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has committed up to **$8 million** to Ventures Platform II — the second fund of pan-African manager Ventures Platform — becoming the institution's first-ever institutional investment in a pan-African venture capital fund.

## $84 million final close

Ventures Platform announced the **final close of its second fund at $84 million** on 27 August 2026, according to Financial Afrik. The EBRD's commitment of up to $8 million strengthened the cap table at a decisive moment, sending a powerful signal to the broader international institutional community.

Ventures Platform is one of Africa's most active early-stage investors, with a strategy focused on Seed to Series A startups across West Africa and beyond. Its first fund backed several companies that have become reference points in the African tech ecosystem.

## Why the EBRD? Why now?

The EBRD — historically focused on Eastern Europe and post-Soviet transition economies — has progressively extended its geographic mandate to high-growth markets beyond its traditional perimeter. Its entry into a pan-African fund marks a symbolic milestone: it formally validates African asset management quality in the eyes of large institutional LPs. « It is a formal recognition that the African venture ecosystem is ready for institutional standards, » sector observers note.

## Why it matters

For the Indian Ocean ecosystem, this signal carries a double message. First, it paves the way for other major institutions — World Bank, EIB, European pension funds — to follow. Second, it confirms that well-managed African funds can now raise from the same circles as their Asian or Latin American peers. For Indian Ocean entrepreneurs and fund managers — still largely absent from these networks — the lesson is clear: institutional credibility is built methodically, not improvised.
