African startups raised **$1.44 billion** in the first half of 2026, spread across 146 transactions, according to The Africa Business Index. The figure is a modest step up from the $1.42 billion recorded in H1 2025 — but the real story lies deeper: Africa's venture capital market is entering a phase of structural maturation.

## Spiro leads, Egypt dominates fintech

The standout deal of the semester went to **Spiro**, the pan-African electric motorcycle manufacturer, which raised **$270 million** in June 2026 across two consecutive rounds — lifting its total disclosed funding to approximately $557 million since inception. That single company absorbed close to 19% of all capital deployed in the period.

In fintech, Egypt emerged as the most active market, accounting for four of the eight largest sectoral deals totalling **$171.4 million**: valU ($63M), MNT-Halan ($71.3M combined) and Blnk ($37.1M) led the pack. North Africa's regulatory maturity and its ability to attract institutional capital are now firmly on display.

## Consolidation and new frontiers

The semester's most telling structural signal was the surge in M&A activity: **63 transactions** were recorded — nearly double the H1 2025 pace — reflecting accelerating consolidation across a maturing ecosystem. Alongside mega-deals, smaller tickets in artificial intelligence, proptech, and EV charging infrastructure indicate that the market is broadening beyond a handful of capital-intensive champions.

## Why it matters

For Indian Ocean entrepreneurs and investors, this H1 2026 scorecard is both a benchmark and a wake-up call. North and East Africa still capture the lion's share of capital. The Indian Ocean region — despite Mauritius's financial hub status, Reunion's dynamism, and Madagascar's untapped potential — remains underrepresented in fund radar screens. With 84% of funding concentrated in just 30 companies, the window for newcomers is narrow. Being visible, structured, and investment-ready is no longer optional — it is the price of admission.
