**African startup funding held above the billion-dollar mark in the first half of 2026, with $1.44 billion raised across 146 transactions — a modest uptick from $1.42 billion in H1 2025\. But behind the headline stability lie major structural shifts: the rise of electric mobility, fintech consolidation, and an M&A wave not seen in years.**

## Spiro: The Deal of the Semester

The undisputed headline of H1 2026 was Spiro, the electric motorcycle startup that raised $270 million to accelerate its battery-swapping network across seven African nations. It was the largest individual raise of the semester and one of the most significant ever in African mobility. Spiro's ambition: replace a meaningful share of the continent's combustion-engine motorcycle taxi fleet — a market of hundreds of millions of units.

Electric mobility has become the new battleground for African venture capital, driven by the combination of massive demand for affordable transport, falling battery costs, and national policies increasingly aligned with energy transition.

## Egyptian Fintech Holds Strong

Egypt emerged as the semester's most dynamic fintech nation, capturing four of the eight largest sector deals totalling $171.4 million. valU ($63M), MNT-Halan ($71.3M combined), and Blnk ($37.1M) confirmed the maturity of the Cairo ecosystem — one that benefits from a rapidly growing banked population and a regulatory framework that stabilised in 2024.

## 63 M&A Deals: The Ecosystem Consolidates

The most revealing figure of H1 2026 may not be the fundraising total but the M&A count: 63 merger and acquisition transactions, nearly double the 2025 pace. This consolidation wave signals a maturing ecosystem — stronger startups are absorbing fragile ones, creating regionally significant players capable of competing internationally.

## Why It Matters

Two consecutive quarters above a billion dollars, electric mobility leading the way, and M&A doubling: Africa's startup ecosystem is no longer a promise — it's an investable reality. For Indian Ocean regional funds, the message is clear: missing these funding cycles means missing the construction of tomorrow's continental champions.
