Africa's startup ecosystem is confirming its upward trajectory. In the first half of 2026, startups across the continent raised **$1.44 billion**, involving 190 companies and 264 investors, according to data compiled by Ilboursa. The year 2026 appears on track to rank among the strongest for African startup funding.

### June 2026: A Benchmark Month

June concentrated most of the momentum. With **$515 million** raised by 48 companies, it was the best monthly result since July 2025\. Equity dominated overwhelmingly: **91%** of June's funds were equity-based, totalling **$468 million** — nearly three times the 12-month monthly average.

### A Maturing Funding Structure

Across the full semester, the split is clear: **66%** equity (around $900 million) and **34%** debt (around $500 million). This equity surge signals that African startups are increasingly capable of attracting venture capital rather than relying solely on lenders.

One caveat: H1 2026 is still **22% below** H2 2025 ($1.7 billion), a reminder that the trend, while solid, is not yet linear.

### Why It Matters

Hundreds of millions in equity in a single month signal long-term confidence from international investors in African founders. For Indian Ocean decision-makers, the message is clear: local ecosystems — Mauritius, Réunion, Madagascar — would benefit from connecting more actively to these continental capital flows, through regional co-investment funds or partnerships with pan-African VCs.
