The African continent is proving its ability to mobilise capital in a challenging global environment. According to the benchmark platform *Africa: The Big Deal*, African startups raised **$1.44 billion** in the first half of 2026 — a figure comparable to H1 2025, tracing a stabilisation trajectory after the turbulence of 2023-2024.

## 190 companies, 264 active investors

A total of **190 African companies** successfully mobilised more than $100,000 during the first six months of the year, from a pool of **264 investors**. The diversity of funders — pan-African funds, international VCs, development banks, family offices — reflects the growing maturity of the continent's startup ecosystem.

The split between equity and debt reveals a healthy funding structure: equity accounts for approximately **two-thirds of the total**, or about $900 million. The remainder consists of venture debt — a financing tool that was rare on the continent five years ago, now normalised by players such as Lendable and MFS Africa.

## June, a record month: $515 million in a single month

June proved exceptional: **48 companies** raised **$515 million**, the best monthly result since July 2025\. Equity represented 91% of that total ($468 million), a strong signal of investor confidence in the fundamentals of African startups.

This June rebound offsets a softer start to the year, placing H1 on a par with H1 2025 ($1.44 billion). It remains, however, 22% below H2 2025 ($1.7 billion), which benefited from several mega-deals.

## Concentration remains a structural challenge

Funding concentration remains a structural issue: **84% of capital** raised goes to just 30 companies. This highlights the gap between nascent unicorns and the wider mass of early-stage startups, which still struggle to access the resources needed for growth.

## Why it matters

For investors and entrepreneurs across the Indian Ocean region, the $1.44 billion figure sends a clear message: Africa retains international capital attention even in a high-rate, risk-averse global environment. The emergence of the Indian Ocean as a startup hub — driven by ecosystems in Mauritius, Réunion and Madagascar — is part of this broader wave. The second half of 2026 will reveal whether the continent can breach the $3 billion annual threshold for the first time since 2022.
