**Standard Bank, Africa's largest bank by total assets, posted an adjusted net profit of ZAR 26.1 billion for the first half of 2026, up 10% year-on-year.** A solid performance achieved despite compressed net interest margins, accompanied by two major strategic moves on the continent.

## Solid results in a compressed-rate environment

Net interest income came in at ZAR 53.2 billion, up 4%. However, the net interest margin declined from 489 basis points to 472, reflecting the impact of lower policy rates across African markets on retail profitability. «A stronger contribution from commercial and retail banking is expected in the second half,» said CFO Arno Daehnke, banking on a recovery effect from Q3 onward.

## Two strategic bets: Tanzania and Angola

In July 2026, Standard Bank finalized an $80 million investment in Tanzania, reinforcing its presence in this fast-growing East African economy. Separately, the bank announced plans to raise its stake in Standard Bank Angola from 51% to 75% during H2 2026 — a clear vote of confidence in the Angolan economy, where an oil recovery is supporting the outlook.

## Africa ex-South Africa as a confirmed growth relay

Standard Bank operates in more than 20 African countries. Its continental subsidiaries outside South Africa represent a growing share of consolidated revenues. The stated strategy: concentrate investments in markets with strong demographic potential and high under-banking — Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, and Angola leading the list.

## Why this matters

Standard Bank's results serve as a barometer for Africa's economic health. A 10% profit increase despite compressed margins signals real underlying activity — loans, transactions, project financing — moving in the right direction. For Indian Ocean decision-makers seeking financial partners for regional projects, Standard Bank is a key interlocutor. Its stepped-up presence in Angola and Tanzania also sends a positive signal on private investment trends in sub-Saharan Africa for H2 2026.
