Startup Spiro finalised a USD 215 million funding round on 1 June 2026, cementing its position as sub-Saharan Africa's leading electric mobility player. The round, led by Impact Fund Denmark and Equitane, follows USD 150 million raised between October 2025 and February 2026, bringing total capital mobilised to over USD 365 million in less than a year.

## 100,000 vehicles, 2,500 stations: a continental infrastructure

Spiro already operates a network of 2,500 battery-swapping stations and 100,000 electric vehicles deployed across seven African countries — making it the continent's leading e-mobility operator for two-wheelers, in a market dominated by motorcycle taxis and delivery riders. The company has also created 6,000 direct and indirect jobs and enabled over one billion kilometres of emission-free travel.

## Kenya and Uganda: the markets driving growth

Uganda recorded over 30,000 electric two-wheeler sales in 2025, while Kenya exceeded 25,000 units — triple the prior year. These figures reflect an accelerating market shift driven by lower running costs versus petrol bikes and growing urban pressure to curb emissions. The USD 215 million raise will enable Spiro to enter new African markets, scale manufacturing and extend its station network.

## A record raise in a booming sector

According to the IEA, Africa's electric two-wheeler sales surged from fewer than 1,000 units in 2020 to approximately 70,000 in 2025\. The Spiro raise was the single largest deal in Africa's logistics sector in H1 2026, a segment that captured 35% of the USD 1.37 billion invested in African startups over the period.

## Why it matters

Sub-Saharan Africa has hundreds of millions of petrol motorcycles in circulation. Replacing them progressively with battery-electric vehicles represents one of the continent's greatest decarbonisation and job-creation opportunities. Spiro demonstrates this model is economically viable at scale — which should accelerate institutional investor interest in African clean mobility.
