South African fintech Moment has closed a $22 million Series A led by AlphaCode Venture Partners, with Canal+, General Catalyst and Helios Investment Partners joining the round. The goal: to reinforce a B2B infrastructure that already processes 600,000 transactions per day across the African continent.

## Infrastructure, not an app

Founded three years ago in Cape Town, Moment does not serve end consumers. Its model is strictly B2B: the startup provides banks, fintechs and large corporations with the technology building blocks to launch their own digital payment services — card issuance, transaction processing, failed payment recovery, and recurring billing.

"Every African market has its own payment rails. This fragmentation is a hidden tax on commerce," says Joel Yarbrough, Moment's CEO. The platform consolidates bank cards, mobile money, bank transfers, eWallets and cash payments into a single integration point.

## Numbers that tell the story

With this raise, Moment's total funding reaches $55 million since inception. The platform claims **10 million monthly active users** and a physical collection network covering **more than two million points of sale** across Africa. These figures make it one of the continent's most extensive payment infrastructures for institutional players.

Canal+'s entry into the cap table is particularly significant: the media group, present in more than 25 African countries, is looking to accelerate the digital monetisation of its subscriptions in markets where bank cards remain the minority payment method.

## Indian Ocean in the pipeline

Moment has not yet announced a specific Indian Ocean presence, but Mauritius, Réunion and Madagascar fall within the priority deployment zone identified by the startup. Mauritius, currently building its national fintech hub (2026-2030 Strategy), represents a natural entry point for this type of infrastructure.

The funds raised will be used to strengthen platform resilience against power outages and connectivity issues — two major constraints across the continent — and to accelerate integrations with new markets. With Helios Investment Partners on board, Moment gains a first-class African institutional network for future expansions.

## Why it matters

Africa remains the continent with the world's highest payment fragmentation. Players like Moment, betting on neutral infrastructure rather than consumer brands, represent the next wave of African fintech funding. Canal+ and General Catalyst's participation confirms that B2B African payments are now drawing global investors no longer deterred by the continent's operational complexities.
