South African fintech Moment announced on 4 August 2026 a $22 million Series A fundraise, bringing its total funding since inception to $55 million. The round is led by AlphaCode Venture Partners, with participation from General Catalyst, MultiChoice, Canal+, and new entrants including Entree Capital, Raba Partnership and Helios Investment Partners.

## 10 Million People, 600,000 Transactions Per Day

Moment's numbers are striking for a startup less than four years old. The platform currently processes 10 million people per month, records 600,000 daily transactions and operates a physical collection network spanning more than 2 million points of sale. Its omnichannel infrastructure unifies bank cards, instant transfers, digital wallets and cash payments — all on a single platform.

The problem Moment aims to solve is structural: the fragmentation of African payment systems, where a Cameroonian merchant cannot easily be paid by a Kenyan customer through a single standardised channel. The platform operates from Cape Town but is designed for all of sub-Saharan Africa.

## A Notable Diversification of Investors

Canal+'s entry into the capital is particularly significant. The French audiovisual group, present in more than 25 African countries, brings Moment a distribution network and subscriber base that could become a vector for mass adoption of digital payments. Existing shareholder MultiChoice confirms its commitment to digital monetisation.

The $22 million will be used to "strengthen Moment's network, enhance its technological capabilities and enter new African markets", according to the startup. The announcement comes as Africa experiences a second fintech wave — following a consolidation period in 2024-2025 — with players prioritising profitability over growth at any cost.

## Why It Matters

Payments are the invisible infrastructure of the economy. In Africa, payment system fragmentation is one of the most concrete barriers to regional economic integration and cross-border trade development. A platform capable of unifying cards, mobile money and cash at continental scale is not just a tech product — it is critical infrastructure. The backing of Canal+ and General Catalyst signals that investment in this sector remains attractive despite a more challenging macro environment.
