In just eight months, African tech has shattered all its M&A records. According to TechCabal Insights, **84 M&A transactions** were recorded for a disclosed value of **$11.4 billion** since January 2026 — already surpassing the full year of 2025\. Africa's great digital consolidation is underway.

## An unprecedented pace

Q1 2026 alone produced **37 transactions** — a record exceeding the 68 deals tracked across the entire year of 2025\. This acceleration reflects a deep market shift: mergers and acquisitions are no longer just investor exits — they have become a primary growth strategy for the continent's most mature companies.

## South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt: the three dominant poles

South Africa leads by volume with **22 transactions**, followed by Nigeria and Egypt with **12 deals each**. These three countries account for more than half of all acquisition targets on the continent. The most active sectors: fintech (acquiring banking licences), mature digital platforms preparing for foreign IPOs, and B2B tech.

## The 'consolidate or disappear' logic

Market players describe a dynamic of survival as much as opportunity: in a context of more selective funding and a falling median deal size (**$2.65 million** vs $4.65 million a year ago), companies are merging to pool balance sheets, share regulatory licences, and reach the critical mass needed for an IPO or continental expansion.

## Why it matters

This consolidation wave signals the emergence of African tech super-conglomerates capable of competing globally. For Indian Ocean investors, it is an opportunity signal: well-positioned regional businesses could be the next acquisition targets — or the next acquirers.
