African startups raised $2.49 billion in the first nine months of 2026, up 7.8% from $2.30 billion in the same period of 2025, according to data published by TechCabal on October 15\. The third quarter was the engine of the recovery, with approximately $674 million raised according to BusinessToday Kenya — after a modest first half.

## Nigeria Leads, Kenya and Egypt Follow

The geography of funding remains concentrated around a few hubs: **Nigeria leads with $624 million**, followed by **Egypt ($396 million)**, **Benin ($345 million)**, **Kenya ($297 million)**, and **South Africa**. A total of 315 transactions were recorded. The dominant trend: « fewer, bigger deals » — fewer rounds but larger ticket sizes, a sign of market maturity and increasing investor selectivity.

## Sectors Driving Growth

Fintech remains the leading sector, but verticals like deeptech (AI, satellites), agritech, and cleantech are gaining ground. Notable deals from the period include Satlyt (Kenya, orbital AI, $8 million), M-KOPA's acquisition of Finland's KilpiTek for $8 million, and Nithio's launch of a $150 million debt fund for African electric vehicle fleets.

## An Ecosystem in Consolidation

Rising average deal sizes are accompanied by greater investor selectivity, increasingly from institutional players (EBRD, Proparco, KawiSafi Ventures). The typical round profile this season: between $4 million and $8 million, with a growing debt component alongside equity rounds.

## Why It Matters

After years of turbulence — valuation pressure, capital scarcity post-2021 — Africa's tech ecosystem is showing tangible signs of consolidation. The Q3 2026 rebound and the nine-month increase send a positive signal to major international LPs watching the continent. For the Indian Ocean region, the key is connecting to these flows: Mauritius aims to become a gateway into continental Africa for capital in transit.
