**In 2026, sub-Saharan Africa holds 74% of global mobile money volume with over 600 million active accounts. M-Pesa, Wave and Flutterwave are reshaping the continent's financial architecture, while players like OPay prepare US stock market listings valued at several billion dollars.**

## A Market Exceeding All Forecasts

African mobile money has become the world's largest digital payment ecosystem. The **600 million active accounts** recorded represent **74% of global volume** in this segment. Forty percent of adults in sub-Saharan Africa use these services daily. Africa's digital payments market is projected to reach **$1.5 trillion by 2030**, with fintech revenues potentially multiplying by 13 to hit **$65 billion**.

## M-Pesa, Wave, Flutterwave: The Continental Giants

**M-Pesa** (Kenya) has **41 million active users** and processes **$323 billion** in annual transactions. The super-app is now expanding into savings and investment. **Wave** (West Africa), the first francophone unicorn valued at over $1 billion, has **21 million active monthly users** across 8 countries. **Flutterwave** (Nigeria), pan-African payment infrastructure that has cumulatively processed **$40 billion**, obtained its banking licence in April 2026.

OPay (40-50 million users) is preparing a US IPO targeting a valuation of **$4 billion** — a signal of sector maturity reaching a new threshold.

## Financial Inclusion: A Social Transformation

The impact goes beyond finance: in Kenya, the financial inclusion rate rose from 26% in 2006 to **84.8% in 2024**, largely thanks to mobile money. Remittance fees have fallen from 10-15% to under 1%, transforming access to money transfers for millions of families. Digital microcredit now reaches **120 million people** who previously had no access to formal credit.

## Persistent Challenges

Despite the momentum, **63% of people covered by mobile internet** still do not use these services — revealing an adoption problem as much as an infrastructure one. Cybersecurity, regulatory fragmentation across countries, and monetary instability in some regions remain structural barriers to cross-border interoperability.

## Why It Matters

Africa is not catching up to the traditional Western banking model — it is leapfrogging it. For Indian Ocean investors and entrepreneurs, understanding African fintech means understanding the future of finance in emerging markets.
