The East Africa CEO & Investment Forum 2026, organised by the East Africa Business Council (EABC), sent a clear message: it is time to accelerate the conversion of investment intent into actual transactions. In a region of more than **310 million people**, the goal is to move from integration rhetoric to tangible commercial and financial reality.

## East Africa: A Structural Market for the Indian Ocean

The East African Community (EAC) groups eight member states — Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, South Sudan and Somalia — representing a market of over 310 million people and a steadily growing combined GDP. The region is a natural and growing partner for Indian Ocean operators: Mauritian financial services, Malagasy agro-exports and Réunionnais logistics and processing all look east.

## The Gap Between Intent and Reality

The 2026 Forum exposed a recurring paradox: investment intentions in the EAC zone are abundant — every pan-African summit generates multi-billion announcements — but their conversion into actual deals remains insufficient. The EABC calls for streamlined cross-border regulatory processes, harmonised legal frameworks between member states and fast-track commercial dispute resolution mechanisms.

## Priority Sectors Identified

The Forum highlighted sectors with high deal-conversion potential: agro-industry and food value chains, logistics and transport corridors (notably the Kenya-Tanzania central corridor), renewable energy and fintech. These sectors attract active capital but remain blocked by regulatory and infrastructure obstacles that delay final investment decisions.

## Why It Matters

Deeper East African economic integration creates direct opportunities for Indian Ocean operators. When EAC corridors open and deals close, the entire eastern continent becomes more accessible — for Malagasy vanilla and agricultural exporters, Mauritian fund managers handling regional capital, and Réunionnais logistics operators on Africa-Indian Ocean routes.
