The Bourse Régionale des Valeurs Mobilières (BRVM) in Abidjan hit a historic milestone on Wednesday, August 20, 2026: its market capitalization exceeded the 20 trillion FCFA threshold for the first time, reaching exactly **20,036.18 billion FCFA**. In less than eight months, the stock market of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) surged by **50.30%**, up from 13,330.71 billion FCFA at the start of 2026.

## A Market That Has Grown 24-Fold in 28 Years

Founded in 1998 with a capitalization of just 836 billion FCFA, the BRVM has multiplied its value **24 times** in 28 years of operation. This symbolic threshold of 20 trillion FCFA — roughly $33 billion — confirms the rising stature of West African capital markets on the continental stage.

The market includes **47 listed companies**. Three sectors dominate: financial services (44.16%), telecommunications (33.36%), and basic consumption (12.54%), together accounting for 90% of total capitalization. The top five stocks — Sonatel Sn, Orange CI, Société Générale CI, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated TG, and Coris Bank International BF — alone represent **49.16%** of the market.

## IPOs and Capital Increases as Growth Engines

The BRVM attributes this momentum to several factors: renewed market attractiveness, successful initial public offerings (IPOs), capital raises, and greater participation from both institutional and retail investors across UEMOA's eight member states. The exchange's capitalization now represents approximately **35% of the Union's combined GDP** — a ratio rapidly approaching emerging market standards.

For context, the Abidjan exchange took fifteen years to cross the 5 trillion FCFA mark, and only two years to move from 15 to 20 trillion. This acceleration reflects the deepening of capital markets across French-speaking Africa.

## Why It Matters

For the Indian Ocean region and beyond, this performance signals a new phase of maturity for African capital markets. Pension funds, insurers, and sovereign issuers increasingly view the BRVM as a model of regional financial integration. The August 20, 2026 close may mark the start of a race toward 25 trillion FCFA — and demonstrates that Africa now has stock exchanges capable of attracting capital at scale.
