On May 7, 2026, the listing of BGFI Holding Corporation on the Central African Securities Exchange (BVMAC) produced one of the most spectacular single-day market events in the continent's financial history. In a single session, the regional market's capitalisation leapt from **CFAF 479 billion to CFAF 1,710 billion** — a rise of **+257%**.

## Listed at 82,000 CFA francs per share

BGFI Holding Corporation, the holding company of BGFIBank Group operating across 12 African countries, entered the BVMAC's **A-PREMIUM Compartment** at a price of **CFAF 82,000** per share, immediately becoming the exchange's largest capitalisation. The free float simultaneously rose from CFAF 70.2 billion to **CFAF 120.6 billion** (+72%), injecting much-needed liquidity into a market that had previously seen limited activity. The BVMAC now lists 7 companies, up from 6 before the transaction.

## A signal for the entire continent

In an editorial published on July 20 in Financial Afrik, Henri-Claude Oyima, one of the architects of the listing, analysed what the IPO signals for the future of African banks. By choosing the stock market route, BGFIBank demonstrates that an African financial institution can tap local capital markets to fund growth without relying solely on international lenders. Following its listing, the group announced plans to raise an additional **CFAF 81 billion** on the same exchange.

## Why it matters

Central Africa had until now lacked a regional exchange large enough to play a meaningful role in the continent's economy. BGFIBank's entry changes that: it triples capitalisation in a single day and anchors the BVMAC as a genuine reference market for the CEMAC zone (Gabon, Cameroon, Congo, Chad, CAR, Equatorial Guinea). For Indian Ocean players, this is a development to watch closely — BGFIBank is already present in Madagascar and could eventually expand its regional footprint.
