**East Africa is establishing itself as the fastest-growing region on the African continent in 2026, with an expansion rate estimated at 6.4% for the entire bloc. Kenya and Ethiopia are the engines, but it is a whole regional economic ecosystem that is consolidating — with direct implications for Indian Ocean investors.**

## Ethiopia: 9.8% Growth, an Economy Opening Up

Ethiopia stands out as one of the world's fastest-growing economies with a 2026 projection of 9.8%. The country has just launched its very first stock exchange, marking a historic break after decades of a closed economy. This institutional signal is attracting foreign capital and partnerships in agro-industry, textiles, and infrastructure. Ethiopia nonetheless faces governance challenges and instability in certain regions.

## Kenya: Continental Financial Hub

Kenya is cementing its role as East Africa's financial and commercial centre. Kenyan companies are actively acquiring competitors in Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, with financial institutions, retailers and tech firms leading this pan-regional consolidation. The port of Mombasa remains a critical gateway for the region's landlocked states.

## Regional Trade in Full Swing

Regional trade within the East African Community (EAC) reached $46.3 billion in Q1 2026 alone — illustrating the depth of economic integration. Rwanda posts 7.3% growth, Tanzania 6.1%.

## Why It Matters for the Indian Ocean

Mauritius' financial centres and companies from Réunion or Madagascar have privileged access to this expanding space. Mauritius, with its 23 double taxation agreements, is positioned to capture a share of investment flows into East Africa. The moment is strategic: Indian Ocean—East Africa economic corridors are intensifying.
