Africa50, the specialist infrastructure investor, has secured **$50 million** in new commitments for its AGIA-PD Fund (Africa Green Infrastructure Acceleration — Project Development). Contributors are Italy's Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) for **$40 million** and Proparco (AFD Group) for **$10 million**.

## A $400 million target fund

Launched in August 2025 with a first close at **$118 million**, the AGIA-PD Fund targets a total of **$400 million**. The ambition: generate up to **$10 billion** in bankable green infrastructure investment opportunities across the continent. Target sectors include energy, transport, and digital infrastructure.

## Breaking the bottleneck

"Project development remains the critical bottleneck for private investment in infrastructure in Africa," Africa50 states. That is precisely the problem this fund aims to solve: by financing the early-stage project preparation phase — the riskiest and most under-funded — it paves the way for far larger institutional private capital.

Proparco, AFD Group's private sector arm, confirms: "AGIA-PD participates in the acceleration of the energy transition on the continent."

## Deeply rooted in African finance

Africa50 has been backed since inception by the African Development Bank (AfDB), KfW (Germany), West African Development Bank, UK FCDO, Soros Economic Development Fund, and Africa Climate Foundation. This constellation of public and private investors gives the fund exceptional credibility to attract international institutional capital.

## Why it matters

Africa needs $170 billion per year in infrastructure, according to the AfDB. The main obstacle is not capital — it exists — but the pipeline of bankable projects. By financing the upstream development phase, Africa50 creates conditions for institutional capital — including African pension funds and insurers — to follow. Each dollar invested in project development can mobilise a significant multiple in total financing: today's $50 million raise aims to generate 200 times its value in real infrastructure.
