The « Infra for Africa Forum 2026 » held in Dar es Salaam on August 5–6 marked Africa50's tenth anniversary. The bottom line: $15 billion mobilized, $9 billion in active projects, and an urgent call to close a still-enormous financing gap.

## Ten Years, $15 Billion

Founded in 2014 by African governments and the African Development Bank (AfDB), Africa50 brought its 38 shareholders — representing 33 African countries — together on the shores of Dar es Salaam to take stock of a decade. The headline figure: **$15 billion** mobilized, with **$9 billion** currently in active project development — spanning energy, transport, digital infrastructure, water and climate resilience.

## A Financing Gap Still Wide Open

Behind the successes, the reality remains sobering. According to the AfDB, Africa needs **$130–170 billion per year** for its infrastructure, with an annual financing gap of **$68–108 billion**. Africa50 represents a meaningful response — but still insufficient to match the scale of the continental challenge.

The forum focused precisely on pathways to accelerate that financing, by mobilizing more domestic African capital: sovereign wealth funds, commercial banks, and pension funds from across the continent.

## Digital and Energy in the Spotlight

The Dar es Salaam discussions highlighted two strategic priorities. First, **digital transformation**: broadband connectivity, data centers, subsea cables, and AI readiness. Second, **energy**: a high-level presidential dialogue examined natural gas utilization for electricity access and industrialization.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan hosted the event under her patronage, while Kenyan Deputy President Kithure Kindiki represented President William Ruto.

## Why It Matters

For businesses and investors active in the Indian Ocean region, Africa50 is a tier-one player: its projects create direct opportunities in regional countries (energy, ports, connectivity). The maturity gained over ten years — moving from project development to financing of bankable projects — makes it an indispensable catalyst for attracting international institutional capital to Africa.
