The **African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA)** was officially launched on **7 October 2026 in Mauritius**. The agency aims to correct structural biases in international credit ratings, whose unfair assessments are estimated to cost Africa **$74.5 billion per year** in excess borrowing costs.

## The Core Problem

Despite historically low sovereign default rates, African economies face high borrowing costs — partly because major rating agencies' methodologies embed biases shaped by data availability and the continent's financial history. The $74.5 billion annual figure represents the estimated premium that misaligned ratings impose on African states in international capital markets.

## How AfCRA Works

The agency is not designed to replace Moody's, S&P, or Fitch, but to provide an alternative built on three priorities: **methodologies tailored to African realities**, **expanded datasets** that include credible estimates of the informal sector, and a commitment to **removing historical biases** rather than simply working around them. The context is favourable: over the past year, **15 African countries** received rating upgrades, and Angola, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa collectively raised **over $9 billion** on international bond markets in late 2025, with orders well oversubscribed.

## A Launch in Mauritius — A Strategic Signal

The choice of Mauritius as the launch venue is deliberate: the country has mature financial infrastructure, a BB rating (Fitch), no capital controls and an OECD "Largely Compliant" status. Mauritius acts as a natural regulatory hub for Africa. The African Development Bank and the IMF project continental growth of around **4% in 2026**.

## Why It Matters

For African companies, banks and project developers often capped by their country's sovereign rating, AfCRA could reduce the cost of capital and broaden market access. Longer term, the agency is meant to strengthen local capital markets, support the African Continental Free Trade Area, and convert the continent's demographic dividend into real economic growth.
